Introducing The Player Cards

Player cards is a new system that was introduced with the Dota 2 28th of June patch.

The cards are intended to be used by Compendium owners and can be stamped directly into the book in order to add that player to your collection.

Player cards represent the participants of this year’s International and will drop as loot in regular and Compendium matchmaking games. You’re guaranteed to get one via a drop after completing your first Compendium matchmaking match after the cards were introduced.

In the future the Compendium will be updated with Player card challenges which will provide rewards for meeting the criteria (more details on this below).

Meet The Teams

It is possible to get a player card from one of the 17 different teams that will be attending this year’s International. Either from one of the 15 teams that have been directed invited to this year’s International or won the qualifiers or from also the 2 teams who are going to compete before the start of the event for the final spot in a wildcard challenge.

For those unfamiliar with the team/player list, you can see it below.

The Compendium

In order to keep a track of the player cards you have stamped and collected the Compendium has been updated with two new sections.

The first section is a player card overview page which will be updated in a future patch to show a list of player card challenges running that week (more on this later).

Going to a team’s profile inside the Compendium will show you the team’s information, accomplishments and most importantly their players. On this page the player faces are greyed out which means you currently don’t have that player stamped into your collection.

Where Do I Get One?

So now you have an understanding of what a player card is, you’re probably wondering how you can collect these cards.

The easiest way to guarantee that you get your first card is to compete in a Compendium matchmaking match which will reward you with a player card the first time you play a Compendium match after the player cards were introduced.

You can also get cards through regular matchmaking drops like you would normally get when playing Dota 2 on any of the matchmaking queues (All Pick, All Random, Compendium etc).

For those who are not interested in waiting around then the system is always open to trading. You can visit one of the many Dota 2 trading sites and attempt to trade for the card(s) you desire.

Using A Player Card

Once you’re in the position where you have earned a player card, the item will be added to your backpack just like a normal Dota 2 item.

Hovering over the card will display all of the details regarding that player, his position in the team, favoured heroes and also his featured match id.

From the backpack you can right click on the card and will be presented with a few options.

The “Watch the replay” option will take you to that player’s featured match in which they performed exceptionally well and will download the replay for you to watch.

The other option which is the most important one is the “Use on Compendium” option which allows you to use up the player card and stamp it into your collection.

Using this option will present you with a dialog warning you that the card will be destroyed upon use. The player cards are a one time use and once stamped into your Compendium they can not be retrieved.

Once the player card has been stamped into your Compendium the team profile page will be updated and that player’s image will be now displayed in full colour, representing the fact that you have stamped/collected that player.

Future Plans – Player Card Challenge

This is just the start of the player card system, in the future there will be more updates to the Compendium to add extra features in this area

One of these features will be “Player Card Challenges”, these challenges will run on a timed basis which will provide rewards for completing them.

From the files we have an idea of the kind of challenges we can expect for when this system goes live. For example, stamping a complete team etc.

“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_0″ “Stamp one complete team\nReward: ???”
“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_1″ “Stamp five complete teams\nReward: ???”
“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_2″ “Stamp all Player Cards\nReward: ???”
“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_3″ “Stamp this randomly selected team: %s1\nReward: ???”
“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_4″ “Stamp this randomly selected team: %s1\nReward: ???”
“DOTA_TIP_Player_Card_Challenge_5″ “Stamp any Mythical Player Card\nReward: ???”

does i need to collect all “team” to participate in “time attack” challenges?
does having a player card added to your compendium allows you to watch replays from events WITHOUT having a ticket to this event?
will “stamp” work like badges in steam?(i mean the system of rewarding or smthing else?)
    ty for answer

    • Lagger

……..where do people like you come from. ALL TI GAMES ARE FREE TO WATCH. It was alrdy like this last year… and it’s the same this year…

  • Voker

So, every time i want to watch a replay it says “acsess to match id denied”. I’m guessin i need to have the ticket of the tournament? but it doesnt say which tournament it is…

  • AntoxaGray

I’m glad player cards not ruined with this new ugly white gradient as for other items.

  • Dr.What

I think that players cards drop from EVERY compendium matchmaking game. I played 5 games already and every single time i get player card (Lod[A] :D)

  • Prophetkiller

fix the players with wrong information!

  • Phoenix

Thank you for clearing out the fog. :)

  • Phoenix

But can you tell us, WHAT WILL BE THE REWARDS? Will we be getting new items?

    • kk

What?! Why would you get the only form of compensation in the game?!
Valve isn’t composed of children, just how stupid are you?
Of course they’ll be sending checks in the mail, and if you so wish it they even have their own mail order bride service!
Though that’s only for VIPs so be sure to put all your money down!
They’ll be BANKING on your continued service.

      • bestcommentimo

“Valve isn’t composed of children, just how stupid are you?”

        rofl

  • Acedia

If we complete a team now and in the future they will add “Stamp one complete teamnReward
do we get the reward or we must stamp again?

  • Fetti

Trading cards? srsly? the last and final time something like that was cool was about 3rd grade in school when there were big trucks and tanks and stuff like that on the cards…

    • v3tr0x

In our school were popular Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh cards. And yeah, nostalgia.

  • AukeRoorda

Dagon on Lone Druid, something went horribly wrong.

  • meebogaming

  • Clengertoots

I was wondering if how are we going to watch the game if access is denied on match ID? :/

  • Lance Gray

So, if you’re a complete TI3 fan you would complete all the stamps without even thinking about the rewards, huh?

    • jokar

Actually yes, I already have 75 cards (out of 85) and NOW I came to this post and saw there will be some rewards… ;) I don’t care about the rewards, I am doing it for myself :)

  • Samer Mustafa

  • daw

    ded gaem

  • TravAverage

WTF I don’t want pictures of nerds for playing dota 2…

    • 1111

      Aww.

    • Tsar Potato

2 bad, because you’ll be getting ones.

    • Luffydude

Why the fuck are you even here then???

      • KyserXv

He’s there to play the game, not adore over some Pro-DoTA player then spends an enormous amount of time playing the game. This should be a optional reward feature for those that want it, and those who don’t, honestly I could give 2 shits about the Pro-DoTA scene, yet I’m forced to have these damn player cards crowding my inventory until I delete them.

        • Luffydude

I meant this Cyborgmatt post… it just makes no sense to whine about it here.
Also judging by your attitude and the way you capitalize the game, just shows how much you care about it… you can delete your whole inventory as well, I wouldn’t give a flying fuck

          • KyserXv

it’s an abbreviation, DoTA is supposed to be Capitalized in my native tongue. Also, WTF is the point in giving me some card about some player I and many others could care less about? Your attitude reflects that you could be given shit that you don’t need and doesn’t do anything for you while being completely satisfied with it as great content. Albeit it’s free, the option to not receive it isn’t there and that is the problem. When it comes down to it, this is a drive to get the over zealous to invest in TI3, and development is suffering due to it.

          • David Mitchell

“Could care less”, What does that even mean, maybe you care more than anything in the world. You could still care less, maybe you dont care much, but “could care less” means you dont care nothing. Could not care less.

          • KyserXv

Are we going to really get it into the Pinker sarcasm debate?

          • lol

Yeah but you’re brony scum so your opinion is ultimately invalid.

          • KyserXv

Thus is the problem with opinions. Your dribble ultimately means nothing at all.

          • Skymnkey

“DoTA is wrongly capitalized. Defense of the Ancients. The “the” is not capitalized. Also, are you honestly that lazy to delete the thing once it comes into your inventory? Seriously, all it takes a few clicks. And if you do get it, you could also trade it for some other cosmetic items. Honestly there’s almost nothing negative about receiving these cards. For Compendium owners, it’s a nice bonus. For people who couldn’t give a shit, all it takes is a few clicks to delete it right after a game. It’s also free trade fodder. Why complain?

        • typicaltroll

OMG why are they forcing us to have free useless items, ded game imo.

        • gocolts12

so trade them. people want them, get some uncommons, or even some rares for certain cards

        • Poe

Valve is trying to make playing DotA more interesting and involving. Collecting items interests many people all around the world, such as with stamp or coin collectors. A lot of DotA players love the pro scene, and like to collect their favorite team’s cards for their compendium.

Why should Valve stop trying to make playing the game more entertaining just because you don’t care about them? Many players find this addition fun. If you don’t care, then ignore them. There is no reason to be childish and whine over such minor things.

        • guest

this is made to get more people intrested in the competitive side of dota

someone who is into the pro dota scene already knows all these players / roles etc etc

the idea behind it is to get people that aren’t into the competitive scene perse but say are playing dota alot and are wanting to improve to go

alright i will check out this replay
          oh watching pros is fun
          i will watch the international

    • fleskarn

Valve isn’t developing their game exclusively for you. There will be features, items, whatever that is not for everyone.

    • kiss me

      lol agreed

    • MaskMask

      Go back to LoL, kid.

  • 111

    nerdy collections no thanks

    • fleskarn

All items are nerdy in DotA,, It’s like clothes for your barbie dolls, just in a really nerdy way.

  • SOLOLLI_322

Volvo, what the actual flying fuck? you don’t releaze heroes (inb4 they’re not inclined to do it yadayada stfu dickriders) but you develop a trading card system, INSIDE the game? who gives a FUCK about ID cards with gamers on them. Are you trying to develop fanboyism like in football? (not eggball)[...]

RELEASE THE HEROES, ALL OF THEM, THE NEWEST ONES INCLUDED. SO WE CAN GET UP TO SPEED WITH DOTA 1.

It feels so wierd STILL not having all the heroes ported yet, considering the speed at which they were coming out last year, yet nothing even close to an explanation to this stagnation.

    • Alex Vizitiu

someone never had pokemon cards :’(

    • informationgalor

I can clearly identify at least 1 person who cares about the cards… you.

Explanation of stagnation: Valve has been implementing other things such as: increasing ease of watching pro games, creating a tutorial for new players, adding team and guild functionality, etc.

When all the heroes are ported, you are going to have to deal with an even smaller rate of heroes being added, so I fail to see your problem.

  • Jackdaw

The reward will be new heroes.
    jk, volvo wat u doin.

  • Nazarus

i can image the card challenge, Na’vi-Xboct use throw… Its super effective

  • FuckUVolvo

Can we just get abaddon and legion commander? fuck you volvo

  • kiss me

so what would i gain from using this , i don’t see any use

  • Ph0BiA

Who cares about player cards, where the hell are the Smeevil Treats/Eggs?

  • IAmStaka

DDC Yao and Sylar don’t drop

  • MiRaNa_iN_LoVe

Since they got released only playercards drop -.-

  • z0mb1e

Yeah, got one of these BS cards when I leveled and was pissed. That’s when I always got something decent for a hero. Very unhappy with these drops.

  • RazorFinger

Will this change the drop rate on the other items?

  • No Place In Heaven

I’ve completed mine. Now surprise me with the rewards!

  • Catule86

Waiting for reward…ive completed all team X(

  • AntoxaGray

wtf is mythical player card? They’re all common.

  • XS

GREAT , NOW WE PLAY DOTA WITH POKEMON CARDS!

    • Dissaproved

      Adrian Trinks, I CHOOSE UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

  • BATMAN

I collected all players :D what will happen next?

  • Hoysala

    fnataic notail

    team dignitas waytosexx

need this card. just this. to complete my whole card.
    add me steam ID hoysala00
    game ID TINTIN00

  • Feeder

when is this player card event going to finish?

  • kazenari

So… I’ve been given a seemingly good player card… but wtf… access denied just because the ‘match where the player excels’ is a pay-to-view or something.
    It’s useless if I can’t view the player’s match.

  • Aha

How is ixmike88 supposed to be 21? Looks more like 40.

  • ceejay

does anybody wants to trade player cards, I got 27 for trading
