This week’s Dota 2 patch has arrived bringing the much anticipated Guild system, more Compendium updates and plenty of behind the scenes goodies.

Front End Changes

GAMEPLAY
- CM Time Penalty change from 20/50/90 to 30/70/110.
- Fixed it being possible to find out where enemy player cameras were looking.
- Prepared Dota 2 for VAC support.

UI
- Added support for forming and managing Guilds. You can invite, kick, promote, and demote members. They have a guild message that can be edited, a logo, and a chat channel. We’ll be continuing with development of additional Guild functionality!
- Added the ability to open a party to a guild, which allows members of a specified guild to freely join the party. Players can browse open guild parties that are available to them.
- NOTE: Guilds will remain disabled on the main client this week. They should be fully live next week.
- Quick Cast moved to separate keybindings, instead of sharing autocast’s bindings.
- Quick Cast can now be used on the minimap.
- Private lobbies can now specify the Dota TV delay between 10 seconds and two minutes. Six minute delay is available for league lobbies.
- The list of matchmaking regions is now sorted by distance from the user. Closer regions will be at the top of the list.
- The matchmaking system will now notify players if a region they wish to play in has gone offline for maintenance.
- Removed spectator item popups for wards, couriers, and dust.
- Fixed Aegis reclaim message popping up erroneously.

AUDIO
- Updates and minor revisions to some Zeus, Alch, and Pugna ability SFX.
- Added -nomicsettings launch option for users of external voice chat software.

PERFORMANCE
- Fixed a crash that could occur on multi-core CPUs.
- Fixed a crash when returning from alt-tab.
- Fixed an audio problem that could occur when disabling the active audio device.

COMPENDIUM
- Added 7 pages of Main Event predictions.
- Added Team Cup results page.

WORKSHOP
- Fixed limited hero selection in Workshop In-Game test.
- Added particle import step to some weapon importers that have gameplay-required particles attached to them (in-game particle preview not finished yet).

Hero Animation Updates

We have some new attack animations for Doom’s Pyre sword that was added in last week’s patch.

UI Updates

We have a bundle of UI updates in this week’s patch with the arrival of the guild system that has been teased over the past month or two.

Guild UI

After some time in development we now have access to the guild system on the test client, the purpose of guilds is to provide a community with an easier way of finding people to party with. In the future this will be expanded on with guild specific match history and weekly leaderboards for stats such as highest GPM.

Creating a guild is done by visiting the updated community tab and clicking on the my guild area which will show you the guilds you’re currently in and how many slots you have free.

The guild creation stage currently allows you to set a guild name, tag/abbreviation and a logo.

The main guild info page currently has information regarding the guild, logo and a changeable message of the day.

Inviting someone to your guild is done via the friends list, similar to how the team and party systems function.

The members page displays all guild members which can be filtered by either their name or rank, the guild’s rank list goes in the following order: Guild Leader, Guild Officer, Guild Member.

The Guild Officers can invite/kick people from the guild and can update the message of the day.

Once you’re in a guild your dashboard is then updated with a new “Guild Party” option which will constantly update to tell you if there are any other guild members that have a party open to the guild.

If no guild parties are open or you want to open your own you can do so by clicking the “Open Party to Guild” button, doing so will display a new window which will let you select which guild you want to open the party to.

The party is then converted into a Guild Party and will allow you any other members of the guild to quickly join the party.

Lobby UI

With the introduction of the guild system the lobby list has been updated with the option of filtering for lobbies hosted by guild mates.

It is also now possible for the Dota TV delay to be configured in the lobby settings now. League Pass admin ticket holders will also have the option of a tournament delay of 6 minutes.

With the introduction of the guild system we have a new option to restrict invites from friends only, similar to the party option.

The quick cast system has also been updated and now moved to its own individual keybinding options.

We also have a default keybind list referred to as “MMO” which provides a more MMO styled key configuration.

For cosmetic items that have gameplay-required particles there is now an particle import step, the in game preview is currently not finished.

The matchmaking region list is now sorted by distance and also has the ability to tell you if a certain region is offline.

The “Waiting for players” UI has been updated to now include the total amount of spectators and how many have successfully loaded.

The Compendium is going to be updated with a number of new pages for the main International event to allow players to make a large number of predictions ranging from hero, player, team, event wide and single match predictions.

The predictions for the tournament have also been updated to clarify that times are based on when GG is called and what defines a big comeback.

“All tournament predictions cover both the Group Stage and the Main Event, but not the Wildcard Match. There will be between 147 and 160 games played. All times are based on the in-game clock, and matches end when a team calls the ‘GG’. Big Comebacks are games where the winning team overcame a greater than 10,000 gold disadvantage.”

With the addition of last week’s team cup system we now have a results page which will show you each week’s winning team and player.

This is pretty much how it is going to look every week.

Backpack UI

All of the cosmetic item set backpack/store images have been updated with a new background style. You can see an example of the new icon style below which provides a better contrast and makes the shaders stand out more.

Tutorial System

The tutorial world map has been updated in preparation for the upcoming new tutorial maps. The full map features two tutorial maps which are required to be completed before new players can start playing Dota 2.

After the initial two tutorial maps the player then has the option of moving onto laning tutorials, bot matches and limited hero pool games.

“You have completed the first two tutorials, learning some of the basic mechanics in Dota, and now have access to the full Dota 2 experience. If you want to learn more, the new player experience continues with: Laning Tutorials, Full Bot Matches, New Player Matchmaking”

There are also a number of other scenarios that are not listed on the map such as Pudge Hook training, Last hit/Deny training and more.

    Why do I get the feeling both heroes are going to be dropped when Dota is officially “released” – Considering its going to be officially released before TI3 (so very soon).

    All this work on the tutorials, that book and the guild system lead me to believe they are going to drop all together.

      i remember seeing an old list which was in hero release order. abaddon and legion were the last in the list. if you recall the speed of hero-releases slowing, there might be a few cyborgmatt-hidden heroes for the drop-your-jaw effect upon release. this is purely a speculation, but would be consistent with promise to release a hero upon reaching the compendium goal.

      I think Valve is aiming for simultaneous hero releases with the Perfect World and the Nexon server. It should take some time until they get it rolling with the localization procedures, as those partners have a handful of work to do.

      One reason why I think Valve will start doing remakes (like the Shadow Fiend one we saw this week), where new voice work and lines are not required.

      To all those who say “You don’t know how programming works”, please stop licking Valve’s ass and think for a second. Last year they ported up to 3 heroes a week AND fixed bugs. Abaddon’s and LC were in beta for a MONTH, they only had to be polished and they were ready, if you don’t understand that more than a month to polish textures is a joke, then it’s not your programming skills that are pitiful but the whole of your cognitive functions.

        While I agree with you on some level you have to also realise the added features between TI2 and TI3 such as the greevil events, the adding of tutorial system, the guild/team systems and other features etc etc.

        Also you have to consider the fact that at TI1 the game had a pitiful 40 something heroes that was really bad for a 1.6 million dollar tournament. So there focus between TI1 and TI2 was to increase the hero pool. That whole year that was pretty much their main focus to ensure that the hero pool was up to a viable competitive manner.

        From TI2 to TI3 the norm seemed to be polishing the game and adding user features rather than content which all points to officially releasing the game in the coming 30 days. You have to also consider that there is only about 10-12 heroes left. IF they had released all the heroes already the anticipation between updates would be boring and the game may become stale before reaching “official” release. Also you want to give new players that feel of getting a new hero we dont want to rob them of that feeling just because the game is officially released.

        In addition you need to know as a long time Dota 1 player we got new heroes once every 3-6 months sometimes even a year. While I dont expect it to ever be this slow in Dota 2, you have to realise that Dota is not based around new heroes its based around meta and balance changes which happen every 3 months on average.

        So in conclusion while I do agree with you on a level its not so “black and white” and that because there is no new heroes the game is dead, think objectively and a bit outside of the box before throwing your hands in the air

          Problem is : Valve doesn’t tell us anything about that. The community has to make everything up because they just won’t say anything. Not even a message on their development forum. Meanwhile they are making money off fan-made cosmetic items, money off their compendium that is about as hard to code as an “hello world” in C, and money off people who don’t realize that they can get a key for free and buy the game (Dota 2 is #69 on steam sales, that’s more than Dead Island riptide and Dishonored, and all that for a FREE game that they SELL, that’s almost a scam if you ask me. Oh well at least the game is now only 10$, but it used to be 25$ which was a joke).
          So yeah, they owe us some explications, I have put more money in this game than in some indie games where the developers actually interact with their community, I usually like Valve but they are doing a terrible job at keeping their players aware with Dota 2.
          And about those heroes being released with the game, do you think new players will care about the fact that there are 2 new heroes ? There will be about 90 new heroes for them, they couldn’t care less about 2 more, the only people who will care about it are those who already play the game aka those who don’t have to wait for its release and that are therefore waiting for no reason.
          And talking about the compendium : Did you see that “choose your hero release” for the 3.2mio goal ? Don’t you think that they would release this hero with haste and wouldn’t take their sweet ass time like they are doing right now ? Some people say that they are making us wait on purpose so we end up buying those stupid things to finally get a hero, I don’t think Valve is that greedy but I’m really starting to believe it when I see patches like that.

            I definitely agree with you on many points. However to me Valve has taken the unorthodox approach to community communication. I may not fully agree with it but I see there reasoning, communication with the community is a double edge sword, Making promises or giving out not fully fledged out ideas might cause more harm than good. There way of dealing with the community is let it self sort out. It works but it can be frustrating so I agree with you there.

            Yes I did not like that compendium goal personally. But with their recent slow hero production its a nice way of giving the community a choice in what hero will come next. Personally I do not believe we will actually even hit 3.2 million and neither does Valve.

            For cosmetic items being community made. That is the beauty of it. Dota was originally made by the community and in a years time I can guarantee custom modes by the community such as the old LOD and OMG modes in Dota 1 will eventually make their way into Dota 2 and new ones made by the community itself. I wont even be surprised if some new heroes in the future will be fully made by the community and then approved by IceFrog and Valve themselves. Its always been the beauty of Dota its a community game, Valve is just providing the foundation for it.

            Also I dont see any negativity in the fact they make their money off community items that are all aesthetic and give no bonuses in game. Hell the fact that the game is successful money wise off a model like that is impressive within itself.

            I did not say that making money off community items was bad, I just meant that when the players are “working” for them they should at least pay them back by being less secretive about what they are doing. I agree that some announcements would be risky to make (like “all heroes will be released tomorrow!”) but basic information such as “the game will be released this month” really isn’t that risky, they just have to press the big red button entited “relize geam” and there they have it, an informed and happy community, even if there is one stone missing in the tutorial map #478. Sadly they don’t even talk about that, if the game was completely free, and by completely free I mean that there is no way (except for donations) for them to make profit out of it then yeah, they could do as they wish. But that’s not the case, I’m pretty sure Dota 2 is Valve’s main source of income right now yet they keep on neglecting their customers and don’t seem to be bothered by it that much.

            It still adds content and depth to the entity of the game. Dota was born as a custom game, custom games being born from dota is fine and essentially is a good idea.

            It is fine if you think they are shit thats your opinion, I didn’t like them nor did I hate them I thought they were a nice distraction from the main game and I am looking forward to more custom games in the future when you CBF for a real game, not all custom games are going to be amazing but eventually you will find that dime. Its how Dota was born. Trial and error, trial and error.

            While I do agree with most of the points exposed by Havocked and Quenji you guys gotta admit it´s been almost 2 months since the last hero release, that´s been possibly the longest gap yet so I just think it´s normal that some people has lost patience (or faith?) already, specially the ¨DED GAEM¨ fanbase :p. Personally im pretty hyped for Abaddon´s release for a while so not seeing him in the hero pool on Test client week after week is a bit dissapointing… but anyways… we are hopefully getting a double hero release next week!

          When you’re saying that “Valve is bad cause they are selling community made items” you’re forgetting few things.

          1)Item creators gets money for it. It’s not just Valve explloits stupid community members.

          2)Monetization system in dota is absolute best. I don’t remember ANY other f2p game , where you can’t buy something that gives you advantage over other players.
          In many of them you are food for powder if you don’t pay.

          3) Selling for 25$
          First thing – nobody is forcing people to buy it for this price
          2nd -IMHO it’s more then fair price for such game in current state.
          3-There was discount as for any other steam game, AFAIR 75%
          4- You got few nice sets with it
          5- You can find dota invite on marketplace for 0.02$, crazy high price

            The game is free, if you go through certain channels. If you don’t want to wait, pay the $10 up front, and they reward you with some extra junk.
            1. Get a friend, ask for a beta invite
            2. Request a beta invite from the site (can you still do this? Haven’t checked, too busy enjoying Dota 2)
            3. Trade for a Beta invite.

            The game is actually pretty balanced. More than I can say for LoL.

        You didn’t consider the new systems added to dota 2 this year, which take up massively more programming than simply adding a hero or fixing a bug.

        The main reason they aren’t releasing heroes, I believe, isn’t because they don’t have time but because they want the completion of the game to coincide with the release of the final hero (final meaning last one currently in dota 1). They are no where near done with the tutorial system etc, so they delay hero releases.

        In between International 1 & 2 Valve’s main objective was to port as many heroes as possible. Now as you see they are adding many other features as you see in this week’s update; the guild system. Also last year they did not release new heroes before the international because they thought it would disrupt the game mechanics before the international started.

        Adding heroes isn’t additive in a programming sense. Each time that you add a new hero there are new and different ways for other older heroes to interact. It becomes more of an exponentially harder task to add new heroes rather than an additive one.

    I also remember playing LoL and getting a new hero every 2nd week. The problem was – the majority of new heroes were shit, 0 innovation, 0 balance, 0 cares.

    I just have to address the mass stupidity regarding the hero updates that’s going on in these comment boards.

    The only reason new heroes are not coming out is because they do not realease new heroes while a big tournament is going on or ever close by. There were no new heroes for a whole month or two before TI2 and during it either from what I remember. So yeah, stop bitching and moaning about how lazy Valve is when it is in all probability one of the only companies of its stature that tries to keep their community as up to date and involved in the game as possible.

    Quite frankly, with a franchise this popular, even if they do about a 100 times worse, you’ll all- me included- would still play the game and love it too. But we’ll just have much more valid reasons to bitch about. Read: Blizzard.

    new items : dev only need to add files with the hero use that set

    new heroes : dev need to set skill that affect other heroes to each heroes data pack and new heroes pack need those heroes with skills that affect other heroes it’s hard dude like

    it takes long time to add medusa because her 1st and especially her ult they must add files where her ult affect other heroes or you want his ult to only do nothing without animation ? lol
