As I predicted this week’s patch brings us five new heroes (as long as you’ve a scepter) which means that Meepo has finally arrived into the world of Dota 2. You can view the full changelog here.

Front End Changes

New Hero

Five heroes in one patch, a new record for Valve.

Meepo

Meepo, the Geomancer.

“If you ask me, life is all about who you know and what you can find. When you live up in the Riftshadow Ruins, just finding food can be tough. So you need to cut corners, you need to scrounge, you need to know your strengths. Some of the beasts up there can kill you, so you need a way to trap the weak and duck the strong. On the upside, the ruins have history, and history is worth a lot to some people. There used to be a palace there, where they had all these dark rituals. Bad stuff. If you survived the ceremony, they would shatter a crystal and split your soul into pieces. They made great art though! Sculptures and such. Let me tell you: sometimes you stumble onto some of those old carvings. Take a pack full of those to town and sell them, then get yourself food for a few weeks. If luck is really on your side, you might find a Riftshadow crystal. Get it appraised and start asking around. Someone always knows some crazy fool looking for this kind of thing. If all else fails, sell it to a Magus the next time one’s in town. They love that stuff. Still, whatever you do, be careful handling those crystals. You do not want one to go off on you. It really hurts.”

Hero Models Broken Down

We’ve an update to one of the existing broken down models and a new arrival.

Crystal Maiden’s Model

UI Updates

This week’s patch brings us a new notification system as well as updates to the hero display and broadcaster selector UIs.

In Game UI

This patch brings another new UI feature, killstreak notifications that are displayed on killstreak events such as first blood and killing sprees.

Hero Display UI

The finished version of the new hero display UI is now in place and ready for the arrival for Meepo, it’s made specifically for heroes with multiple primary units eg: Meepo and Lone Druid.

Broadcaster UI

The broadcaster selector UI has been updated with a new look:

Dashboard UI

The live games list on the watch tab has been updated with a filter, the filter is done based on what hero you specify and the games will be listed in an order of average skill, highest to lowest:

League Passes

This week’s patch has brought a couple of new Dota TV League Passes, one for the RaidCall Dota 2 tournament and another for Starladder’s Season 3 tournament.

    Because IMO its pretty distracting/annoying and I would like to switch it back to “normal”

      Meepo’s still only in Dota 2 Test. They’ll probably add him into the actual Dota 2 client in around six or seven hours (assuming they follow the same pattern as other heroes).

I mean, I can understand making the mistake of letting some intern work on a hero alter, but to put it in the client for all to see when it’s objectively worse than the previous version?

      The phrase “objectively worse” has been cropping up a lot lately, and it’s simply hilarious. There is NOTHING “objective” about YOUR opinion on her appearance. Yes, the fact that she has less facial animations is an issue and should be addressed. Yes, the fact that she is still not smiling is also an issue…and should also be addressed. But your opinion is not “objective.” Check out a dictionary sometime.

        If the answer to any of the three is “no”, then I suggest you skip the dictionary lessons. I’m not expressing an opinion here, I’m giving an assessment of technical prowess behind the new model. The values and relations are obviously worse, from the shape of the jaw and chin to the bridge/nose tip ratio to the unnaturally tilted eyes. This is all IN RELATION TO AN EXISTING MODEL that not only had better proportions, it also conveyed the idea behind the character better.

          i think you forgot that this is not human, rather it is a dryad, and how the dryad look like is up to the creator. it is a fantasy model, not a reality model where you are strict to some ‘requirement’.
          and more importantly, whenever the model is good or not, is not based on one person alone, as some people might think that she is better, while some people might she become worse.

          so please stop talking about objectively, as it is clearly subjective based opinion,

          Again, you’re using completely subjective terms like “obviously worse” and “better proportions.” It IS your opinion, there are many Dota players who strongly disagree with you. If the justification for YOUR OPINION is that her face doesn’t conform to common human proportions, then it is inherently flawed: she isn’t human. Humans don’t have horns growing out of their forehead. They don’t have the lower body of a doe. Even if they did, we’re talking about the depiction of said features in a top-down game, so you’ll have to take general perspective into account as well.

          In case you didn’t hear/read, there were many who complained that the EXISTING MODEL looked like a 30+ year-old woman. That simply does not convey the idea behind the character – you know, a cheerful young dryad. That’s not an opinion, it’s logic. Giving younger features to a supposedly young character who looked to old is logical.

          Yes, I do have a degree in fine arts. And yes, in order to obtain said degree, I studied human anatomy. I’ll concede this, however: I did not study Valve’s DRYAD anatomy on a technical level. But I suppose YOU did, right? And I suppose Valve is bound by said DRYAD anatomical proportions in designing their characters?

            The proportions of her face do not have to adhere to natural proportions of the human face. They do however have to fit in a certain spectrum of distortion, beyond which the human eye stops responding well to what it sees. This is pretty basic stuff, first semester of any anatomy course. The current model does not conform to that spectrum – it’s artificially triangular and top heavy with misplaced eyes and flat forehead. And the general reaction of people who do not have that theoretical knowledge confirms my position on the matter – the new design OBJECTIVELY isn’t working. And I’ve already said why. There is a difference between alien shapes designed to make the viewer feel uneasy about what he’s looking at and something that’s just plain badly proportioned. The new design is the latter.

            And these features are only ever visible in portrait view, where the top-down nature of the game has no application, so I have no idea why you find that relevant at all.

            If you think the previous model looked like a 30 year old woman, I have nothing to tell you. It didn’t look like that for me. Not the that current version looks young. More like emaciated. Whatever.

            Your rapier sharp wit is also noted. Shame it has nothing to do with the subject at hand.

Really, refer to my first comment, because you are STILL not grasping the diffrence between “subjective” and “objective.” In any case, there are plenty of players who do not have that theoretical knowledge and still find the new model appealing.

            Additionally, no, it does not HAVE to fit into a “certain spectrum of distortion” in order to look appealing. Again, this is NOT a human woman we’re talking about. She is a dryad. In an unrealistic video game. You act like Peter Konig and the other artists at Valve have never had any sort of professional art training. Did it ever occur to you that her facial features were INTENTIONALLY deviated from common anatomy in order to further differentiate her from the more-or-less “human” characters in the game?

            Not every humanoid character has to have anatomically-accurate features in a fantasy video game, especially not Dota. If that were the case, where the hell is Furion’s nose?

            Eh, I’m not sure if there’s any point in dragging this out. You clearly do not want to accept that someone’s opinion on something can be positive or negative (and thus subjective) but that has nothing to do with the technical quality of the object. There’s plenty of people who like to eat at McDonald’s or listen to Justin Bieber. There are those who don’t like veal in red wine or Bach. They’re exercising their right to SUBJECTIVELY pick what they like. But that doesn’t mean that a line produced cheesburger is of better quality than a dish made from fresh ingredients by a qualified chef, nor does it mean Bieber makes better music than Bach. Because the are OBJECTIVE qualities that tell us where each of those items belong on a scale going from bad to best. I admit, this does invalidate my previous argument based on vox populi, but there you go.

            And no, no human is infallible. Valve has already modified the new Enchantress skin by removing the horrible anime eyes she had in the first iteration, so they’re clearly capable of admitting they made a mistake. Whatever they tried to make didn’t work out the first time around and by my professional judgement, still isn’t working. Not to mention you don’t need to white knight them, since I never personally attacked any of the artists involved in the DOTA2 project.

            Last but not least, you’re still confusing anatomically accurate features with features that are proportional. If you want to make a humanoid face, you have to remain within certain constraints to make it both believable and pleasant to look at. You cannot stretch it as you like and hand wave valid complaints away just because “it’s not human”. Sites like deviantArt are full of people who think that anything goes. Well, it doesn’t.
