The main Dota 2 client has once again seen a patch this week, skipping the test process and launching the Dota 2 store and workshop. You can see the full changelog here.

Front End Changes

This week’s patch enables the in game store, backpack, loadout and workshop system that has been worked on for a number of months now.

UI Updates

A number of updates to the UI this week with the arrival of the Dota store.

The Dota Store

The Dota store allows you to buy individual items, couriers, tools or bundles. Even though the store has just launched nearly all of the items have been contributed by players, whom will gain profits from their items sold on the store (basically identical to how the TF2 workshop/store system is setup).

The tools section allows you buy a number of different tools, such as the name and description tags that have been in TF2 for a while now.

You can also buy “Battle Bonuses” which are basically boosters that will increase the rate in which your Battle Points. Battle Points are earned at the end of matches and go towards levelling up your profile, upon levelling up you’ll always receive an item. There’s also a chance that an item will drop at the end of a match as well.

If a player in your game is using a Battle Bonus you’ll also be granted a bonus for playing in the same game as him/her, this bonus is stackable with your own booster.

The meat of the store is the bundles section, here’s where the named item sets are sold at a discounted price (vs buying each item individually).

You can either hover over the items to see a description/more details or by clicking on it, which will take you to a full page for that specific item which will show if it is part of any item sets.

Clicking on a bundle will also bring up a full item page, showing a preview of what the hero looks like wearing all of the items in the bundle.

The Dota Store – Backpack

The backpack is where all of your items and tools are stored.

The Dota Store – Loadout

The loadout page uses the same card system from the hero selection screen. The same filters can be used as well as the typing shortcuts etc.

Selecting a heroes` card and opening up the customisation page will allow you to use items in his/her’s loadout slots, for example Nature’s Prophet has a number of different slots, for replacing his staff, beard, bracers, shoulders etc.

It is also used to equip “Non-Hero Items” use as action items (gifts), custom announcers and custom couriers.

Selecting a loadout slot will display a 3×3 grid displaying the items that are equippable in that slot.

The “You have new items” dialogue that TF2 players will be familiar with is also in Dota 2. Also the strange weapon attribute is already in as well for items that are unboxed from the treasure chests.

The Dota Store – Workshop

The Dota 2 workshop is now live, the interface has remained the same since I last covered it.

Hero Selector UI

The new hero selector UI has also been updated to include a loadout editor before the match starts.

Scoreboard UI

At the end game scoreboard you’ll now see your Battle Level and the amount of Battle Points you’ve been rewarded. At the bottom of the scoreboard you’ll see item drops/loots rewarded to different players.

Visual Updates

When you’re playing in a game with someone who has a Battle Booster activated you’ll see a notification informing you that the Battle Points for this match will be increased by 15%, also a model of the Battle Booster icon will appear above all of the player’s heads.

Hero Updates

We’ve more tweaks for one of the existing heroes again in this week’s patch.

Ogre Magi’s Hero Update

Ogre Magi has received some updated materials and a new minimap icon to reflect the changes made to his materials.

Phantom Assassin’s Portrait

Phantom Assassin’s portrait has once again been updated, no longer the tron warrior, she has now fallen into a bucket of green paint.

Updated Sound Files

We’ve a number of music stingers with references to “loot”, they will most likely play when loot is dropped at the end of your game.

Unreleased Particle Models

Phantom Assassin now has a model for her dagger for use in her particles.

Unused Cosmetic Items & Misc Tools

There are a number of cosmetic item models that are currently not being used or implement, there’s no confirmation whether these will be used in the future but I’d figured you guys would want to see them any way.

Bloodseeker’s Cosmetic Items

Bloodseeker has another full item set that is unused, I’m not sure what’s it is called the models are all named under a “Redrim” tag.

Broodmother’s Cosmetic Items

Broodmother has a couple “Battle Armour” models, which overlap on top of her current model.

Juggernaut’s Cosmetic Items

Juggernaut also has an unused set, referred to as “Nomad”.

Kunkka’s Cosmetic Items

Kunkka’s alternative heads (beardless and zombie) now have their textures.

Beardless Kunkka:

Zombie Kunkka:

Nature’s Prophet’s Cosmetic Items

Looks like NP has done a bit of time travelling, he already has his Santa hat and beard ready to go.

Omniknight’s Cosmetic Items

Omniknight has an unused hammer, referred to as the “Dingus Hammer”.

Pudge’s Cosmetic Items

Pudge has an unused Skeleton Hook.

“item_name”: “Dragonclaw Hook”,
“item_description”: “The claw from a black dragon’s left toe. The only piece of the beast that survived an encounter with Pudge’s voracious hunger.”

Warlock’s Cosmetic Items

Warlock has an unused alternative model for his Ultimate’s Golem, which makes sense seeing as he has an ability loadout slot for his ultimate. (Can’t wait to see those community made alternative golems)

It’s referred to as a Four Legged Demon:

Windrunner’s Cosmetic Items

Windrunner’s hood/cape combo returns into the files, I have covered this before. I’m surprised this wasn’t available at the store launch, can’t wait to buy this one.

Witch Doctor’s Cosmetic Items

Witch Doctor has a Bone Mace, obviously it is not finished/to the proper scale yet.

“Rare” Items

A few of the item models have a “rare” version, which look different from their “normal” model. A lot of these aren’t implemented yet.

Tidehunter’s Normal “Pirate Slayer’s Tricorn”:

Tidehunter’s Rare ”Pirate Slayer’s Tricorn” (Isn’t used in the game yet):

Tidehunter’s Normal “Excavator’s Treasure”:

Tidehunter’s Rare “Excavator’s Decorated Treasure” (This is already in the game and is dropping for people):

Axe’s Rare “Molten Helm” (No normal version – Isn’t used in game yet):

Sven’s Rare “Commander’s Flameguard Variant” (This is in the game/drop only – The sword is not included):

Misc Tools

There is an image for a “generic” chest in the files but is not present in the item schema, probably there for use in a future patch.

The “Dota 2 Early Access Pass” has now been renamed to “Dota 2 Invite”. The purpose of this bundle is for people not in the beta yet, which makes sense seeing as what is limiting Valve right now is their server capacity, the deployment, although large, is just not large enough for an open beta yet so doing something like this allows for a small, steady stream of new users into the game.

“item_name”: “Dota 2 Invite”,
“item_description”: “Get immediate access to Dota 2 and start playing right away! Or get an extra key to trade to a friend.\r\n\t\tThis bundle includes a Mighty Boar courier, and a full set of items for Sven, Axe, and Witch Doctor. Use the Dota 2 Invite from your Steam inventory to unlock the game.”

oh men, i want PA be more like feminine. :(

    • Important VIP DotA player

Yes please….also she shouldnt look “undead” but alive and smart. AND HOT!

      • Guest

Why the hell must every female hero be hot? I don’t think sexy is bad, but having tits and ass for every single female is just downright sexist. There is no need for a hero like Mortred to be hot, she just needs to look cool like in the concept art.

        • Guest

          Um… No?

No tits n ass = not playable

          • Guest

Then go back to League of legends. If you’re not mature enough to think a character should be played because they’re rather than having big breast and a big ass and no clothing, you’re a moron who doesn’t belong in a game that requires focus. You’ve likely lost more than half of your games with that attitude.

          • Asagi Asagiri

so thats why people dont play spectre much…

          • FoxCharge

The new PA is much better than the previous one, and WAY better than the Maiev WC3 model. Not EVERY video game needs to rely on overtly sexualized females to get people to play it.

        • 211v312

Next female needs a penis or I’m not playing!

        • Cidtheninja

You think Broodmother and Spectre are hot?

        • Te

spectre :) cool looking hero :D

        • KPMaker

Is it not a consolation prize for getting your butt kicked by a girl- Man she is lucky her breasts are sexy otherwise I’d be mad. :)

There is a reason why women are getting cosmetic breast and butt implants in the real world.  Maybe we should convince Valve to make sure all male warriors have nice sexy calf implants to make things fair and balanced. ;)

fuck this whole store thing… fuck it fuck it fuck it!
such utter bullshit! I dont care if the game is free therefore, all those frikkin items are destroying the game…. as is the fuckin bonus point thing… fuck this valve… fuck.

    • Bthammer10

Please educate me on what is going to give bonus points to hero’s?

      • Kirves

You’ll most likely get battle points for your matches, which can be used to buy cosmetic items if you don’t want to purchase them with real currency. However, I’d imagine it’ll be slow and/or the items costly to persuade you to spend real money; which I’m not suggesting is a bad thing.

    • Coremore1

      Moron

    • Kirves

Something that isn’t out yet and will have zero impact on gameplay is destroying the game?

      • nana

So tell me then, how does it NOT destroy the game ?
You argument is invalid, because I could say the same too.
And your telling me, different appearance = no impact on gameplay ? Thats BS

        • TootsMcGoots

I am saying that different appearances have no negative influences on game play or competitive balance until they release the Dazzle pack where every hero dresses up like Dazzle.

        • MickJ

Woah, that guy is wearing a different hat! My entire gameplay experience has been ruined!

The effect of a slight cosmetic change isn’t going to “destroy” the game. Stop acting like a child.

          • CNAKNEL

Ofc it has an effect on a gameplay, for example you may not recognize the hero you attack – you see ursa and in fact he is broodmother in her ursa hat!

          • http://twitter.com/jones_ghost Alex Ghost Jones

             AHAHAH FUCKING TROLL

          • Levithian87

thats kinda hard tbh, confusing ursa with broodmother but okay…

          • CNAKNEL

              trolololo?

          • Lie Bot

There are console commands which allude to being able to disable cosmetic items on the client side. It seems you’ll be able to choose not to see what other people are wearing.

          • Victor

indeed, the individual will be cosmetic, then the ursa will always look like the ursa, and if in doubt just look at the scoreboard

          • Otatop

have you seen the skins/items so far and how its setup? from what it looks like you cannot change the basic hero so you could never mistake a brood for an ursa since most models are distinct enough that even if you made them all white its only probably windrunner and drow ranger you might confuse. plus you can always look at your minimap

          • CNAKNEL

            trolololo

          • KK

The cosmetic items fit the game style as said in the FAQs. And you wont get confused, in DotA Shadow Demon and Lycan shared the same model people didnt get confused from that…

          • CNAKNEL

             trolololo

          • ya blind or something?

            you need glasses.

i do hope they keep paints far away from this game, though. i dont want to see a pink sven running around.

        • K-Apathy

You’re an idiot. The only benefit for a P2P model is idiots like you can’t always scrounge up $60 dollars from your parents to play.

        • Otatop

How does it destroy the game? Does the item add stats? No Does it add skills or abilities or a buff? No Does it make it harder to click on a hero? No So if it doesnt do anything to gameplay and mechanics whats so bad about it? you just sound like some 5 yr old who didn’t get the toy he wanted

        • Vu Viet Anh

I really think the way Valve implement it is different from other games, Like HON or LOL where they change the whole model. For DOTA 2, valve only changes different body parts – the base model is the same. Therefore a hero doesn’t change a lot. Not to mention all the particle systems are the same.

    • Per

How do u think they whould make money then? If they dident have it the game whould cost money.

      • nana

Yes, thats what I was always hoping for. Full price retail!

        • mattlight07

that would kill the game even faster. for a game with Lol and hon as f2p competitors, you’ll be losing the general ARTS audience as possible clients. the bigger target audience is the wc3 dota players who already have access to dota and having to buy dota 2 may discourage some, thats potential loss as well, considering there are millions of wc3 dota players, thats millions lost.

a full retail price for a game that potentially will need a really immense amount of servers can only support itself as long as new purchases are being made. Wow needs monthly payments even after buying the game.

a f2p model in the long run may even yield revenue more than if the game was initially bought, that means valve will be able to sustain itself and its services.

mind if you elaborate more on how cosmetics ruin the game?

          • Deadpool

This this and more this, You sound like you actually know something and not just counter arguing all these whiny kids. If they think with their tiny brains they would see that HoN tried the retail thing and it didn’t work, it actually failed. This kind of game isn’t a grind fest like WoW and in that sense shouldn’t require subscriptions, I believe your spot on if only everyone realized this…

    • http://twitter.com/PixelSith64 Michael

This has nothing to do with gameplay, they’ve already said that these are and will remain cosmetic. How are they destroying the game? They’ve been out for under 12 hours at this point, I don’t think you can say the game is ruined because of them.

Not only that, it appears that there will be a cosmetic disable option for anyone who doesn’t want them. The bonus points just go to having a rank to show off and get more items from. Again, more cosmetics.

      • Guest

Where are you getting this moronic notion that they are gonna allow people to turn off cosmetics. There isnt one in TF2 why would they put in this. If they do that it really just becomes free client side modding, unless they try to add some sort of tampering mech that trys to validate fails every game load. If they did that they could maybe do it but people would probably find away around that, and they want people to have to see your shit thats kinda the whole point.

    • Guest

Oh boohoo, cry some more you little baby.
It can be disabled anyway you whiny fuck.

      • Guest

If that so point me please where it can be disabled, cos it is first thing i will do.

        • RutRo

          It cant be there idiots.

          • Guest

I spin your opinion on my d!ck.

    • dLIGHT

So much cry. All of these possible purchases aren’t going to effect you in any way. Don’t want to buy pretty clothes for your heroes? Don’t fucking purchase them. If people want to spend their money on aesthetics then let them. Not to mention that it will be like Team Fortress 2′s backpack/shop: You will unlock stuff like this for free just by doing mini-achievements in game.

All this bullshit “dota is selling out” attitude is fucked. The game is going to be free, and self-entitled pricks like you want everything for nothing. Let valve support the game by making a bit of money.

    • Cyborgjohn

I don’t understand your reasoning. In what way exactly is this destroying the game? These are all purely cosmetic items and do not change the gameplay in any way whatsoever.
Get your facts straight before you comment, kiddo.

    • Soneka

You can buy skins in the store. Skins are optional, so paying is too. Btw, the skins are awesome.

  • Over

Valve is a company. Companys makes money. If this wont affect the game like they said,  i totally agree. For the sake of being free, and enjoyable. Dota2 cant beat LoL with a monthly pay, or like the accounts on HoN (on the start, 30$ to unlock the account and play).

    Ty for the content analysis.

    • Victor

No, you are wrong. Original Dota always will be free, then his son have to be free too.

      • Luka483

Lol dude…you’re forgetting the thing the warcraft bundle wasn’t free…..other the thing that 70% of people had hacked version downloaded from torrent or shit…..so basically DOTA 1 WASN’T FREE

      • Vu Viet Anh

I played DOTA 1 last week and guess what? I can’t play it anymore. I’m in love with DOTA 2 now.

soooooo I don’t really care whether DOTA 1 is free or not (u have to pay your internet bills if you want to torrent it anyway, just sayin’). I will still buy DOTA 2 when it comes out.

        • TurquoiseTail

Dota 2 is F2P, no problems here

        • Guilherme

Yeah, same here, got just really bad in dota1 because of the differences. Dota2 has a much better interface. Also more intuitive

      • beenman

I thought you needed a copy of warcraft 3 to play dota 1

        • 345b4

You do, but DotA it self is free.

      • Makal

So… Are you agreeing with him or not?

    • wdasd

       u mad bra?

    • Largs

i think in just one year dota2 will have passed lol on players and profit

  • http://twitter.com/usmolya Yura Smolynski

any upgrade to premium account for buying from shop, like TF2?
    same with Dota2?

  • Ilshavoh

  • Assdow

  • Asif

PA looks better, but still looks like a bald drow

  • SeCTeen

Anyone who knows what the hell is wrong with the keys? I can’t seem able to purchase one, in the client, the window refreshes when I try to Checkout while at Chrome I get this:
Failed to initiate transaction due to an internal server error. Please try again in a few minutes or contact support if the issue persists.

  • xantraz

Why are you talking with trolls? We all know that Valve and contributors did a great job and these skins are definitely less mindfucking than the LoL and HoN ones, because they actually use the hero’s color schema and style, instead of changing Windrunner into a Playboy bunny.

    • Pray

Hopefully Valve and Icefrog holy to there word and continue in this fashion. It was said when it was first announed they would not fuck with the visual style or graphics of they game, clean, understandable, and no graphical distraction.

      • Shibubu

VALVe said in their FAQ that they are leaving this kind of stuff for the community to decide. So visit dota2 workshop occasionally and UP_vote/DOWN_vote cosmetics you endorse/loathe.

  • Workapproachingon

    Wisp is trolling

can someone confirm Witch doctors set is gifted when you buy something? Or how can you get it?

    • Cheezdude

I bought a key, got the set.

  • Peacekeeper

Love the cosmetics, but hopefully they won’t go too crazy like LoL. I don’t see why people are complaining about it. It makes the game, visually, more interesting. Plus it makes the game F2P, without cosmetics, you would have to play for DotA 2. Don’t like them? Maybe you can disable them in later updates, but for now, chill your balls. Don’t like it being F2P? DotA 2 would be the less played game compared to LoL and HoN. Most people who would being playing if it was P2P would probably be high skilled players.
All Im saying is F2P helps the DotA 2 community the most, cosmetics make it more creative and ‘fun’ to look at. So stop the trolling/complaining and wait for the next patch.

  • Netnicolas

Dude they keep screwing with PA’s look. Damn, its getting worse and worse, give it a week and they will give her a beard and a penis… and maybe change her color to yellow…
Damn, never tought that i would say that, but i rather play with her DOTA 1 model (and that was awful!).

    • Qualia Noire

She looks kinda like a zombie now! :P … I think the theme in the concept art suits for her more than this! :)

      • jerry

she looks good man. the hero is – ‘pahontom assassin’

      • putakte

i’m guessing that the one that is shown as concept art would be her alternate skin..sold for $15…lol

  • http://www.facebook.com/nikko.jucutan Nikko Mondejar Jucutan

    Good Job ^_^ nice effort

  • PixOre

“I’ll finish the rest tomorrow” he said

    • Cyborgmatt

I’m finishing it now, had a hangover this morning and was busy the day before.

      • choiie

        And? ^_^

  • Primrose~

No mention of the Rare Flameguard set for Sven? Comes with alternate mask and different skins for everything else.

  • Jordan Terrazas

Wisp’s materials aren’t anything to laugh about, the hero is going to be a particle. And the particles are based around a hero model, which is why the texture is just one solid color.

    • Vu Viet Anh

Here are some changes, go and buy yourself a sense of humour.
