This week’s Dota 2 test client update has arrived early bringing us the shitty wonderful wizard, Rubick. You can view the full changelog here. 

Front End Changes

UI Updates

This week’s patch brings a couple new additions to the UI. An interface for selecting the in game announcer you want to use and updates to the tournaments watch tab.

Announcer Selection UI

The announcer selection UI lets you choose between the default Dota announcer and custom announcer packs that you can now purchase.

The announcers on the test store (At a guess the Mega Kill sets will play for all of the players in the game when the killing spree message is related to you, eg: you get a double kill):

Backpack UI

The in game backpack has been updated to now display 64 items instead of 25.

Visual Updates

We’ve a couple of visual updates in this patch.

Mirana’s Arrow

Mirana’s arrow has received a 20% reduction in size.

Skadi Particle Effect

Skadi now has a particle effect.

Hero Animation Updates

We’ve a number of animation updates for the older heroes in this patch.

Alchemist’s Animation Updates

Alchemist has some new animations:

In Game League Passes

The weekly readers will know that there have been a number of references to an in game league pass system. The system will now be launching with JoinDOTA’s Defense tournament becoming the first 3rd party tournament to make use of it.

The league passes will allow you to view all of the tournament games live on Dota TV (In game, in glorious HD) and will also give you full access to the replays. You can find a full blog post from Valve detailing this new system here.

Tournament Tab

The tournament tab has been updated to reflect the release of the league pass system.

Each tournament is now displayed on a separate row with a tournament card, name and description.

Clicking on the tournament will open a full page view displaying a list of the current live tournament games and a list of replays for matches which have already finished.

Rubick, the Grand Magus

The arrival of Rubick in Dota 2 gives us a version of the hero who is not limited by engine limitations and some sexy custom spell animations that are specific to him for the spells he steals.

Rubick – Lore

“Any mage can cast a spell or two, and a few may even study long enough to become a wizard, but only the most talented are allowed to be recognized as a Magus. Yet as with any sorcerer’s circle, a sense of community has never guaranteed competitive courtesy.

Already a renowned duelist and scholar of the grander world of sorcery, it had never occurred to Rubick that he might perhaps be Magus material until he was in the midst of his seventh assassination attempt. As he casually tossed the twelfth of a string of would-be killers from a high balcony, it dawned on him how utterly unimaginative the attempts on his life had become. Where once the interruption of a fingersnap or firehand might have put a cheerful spring in his step, it had all become so very predictable. He craved greater competition. Therefore, donning his combat mask, he did what any wizard seeking to ascend the ranks would do: he announced his intention kill a Magus.

Rubick quickly discovered that to threaten one Magus is to threaten them all, and they fell upon him in force. Each antagonist’s spell was an unstoppable torrent of energy, and every attack a calculated killing blow. But very soon something occurred that Rubick’s foes found unexpected: their arts appeared to turn against them. Inside the magic maelstrom, Rubick chuckled, subtly reading and replicating the powers of one in order to cast it against another, sowing chaos among those who had allied against him. Accusations of betrayal began to fly, and soon the sorcerers turned one upon another without suspecting who was behind their undoing.
When the battle finally drew to a close, all were singed and frozen, soaked and cut and pierced. More than one lay dead by an ally’s craft. Rubick stood apart, sore but delighted in the week’s festivities. None had the strength to argue when he presented his petition of assumption to the Hidden Council, and the Insubstantial Eleven agreed as one to grant him the title of Grand Magus.”

The Battle Point clarification strings have been updated and now say that all bot matches (not just practice matches) will not award Battle Points, which at a guess means COOP games will no longer be awarding BP:

Unreleased Store Items

There are now more references to these “Strange Essences“. We have a number of new types instead of the standard “Carries Killed” one that we were already aware of.

Strange Essences

At a guess, these strange essences will allow you to turn any existing cosmetic item into a strange item, applying which ever stat tracking attribute you like, ranging from the number of first bloods you’ve gotten to the number of wards you’ve planted.

Unreleased UI Updates

Team UI

The team UI has once again been updated, the new system allows for teams to upload three types of logos now, a “Team Interface Logo”, a “Team Base Logo” and a “Team Banner Logo”.

These logos will be displayed in game replacing the base logo and the base banner with the custom images the team has picked.

      Not a sorcery, just valve being valve, which is good. Rubick model in wc3 is too ordinary that valve needs to make an original model. it turns out magnificent. if the community give valve same expectation for another model, we would have seen another beautiful model. this is why i hate community for wanting PA, Brewmaster, etc looks ‘exactly’ the same while valve can make more beautiful and creative models.

      *still hate PA for being looks like wc3 model. her 1st and 2nd concept model looks more promising.

    Rubick really doesn’t look like he even belongs in DOTA 2 with this model…

    Was good to go through the announcer packs and see a few funny lines here and there.  Was also nice to see the DM and AR modes included in them.

    The “pay to see tournaments” stuff is kind of harsh at first glance, but who knows about both it and if the streamers will “take advantage” of the whole thing.  Depends how much Valve would share with them I suppose, but it could really be a punch in the gut to the scene if they do it wrong..

       There are still going to be free streams off of the Dota2 site being cast. The paypass lets you watch it crisply through the game with your controls over how it’s viewed, and helps pump some cash into the tourney setup scene. It’s not at all dissimilar to the way certain events offer subscriptions for high quality streams, in addition to their free casts.

    I like the feature that base logo can be substituted. And selling tourments is an innovative method to make mini business. Valve takes much effort on dota 2.

    I don’t know how to break it to the guy who said that Rubick is cartoonish but… the whole game is cartoonish. Not as intensive as LoL but still far less gritty than HoN. Rubick fits, I love his model, he’s supposed to be outlandish. I don’t think the generic human magus would be as distinct as him.

      Yes the game has a cartoonish style, but to a much lower degree than LoL. There are many highly-detailed human heroes like Kunkka, Omni, Invoker, Lina etc, and that’s what I expected Rubick’s model to be like. He is still a human, after all, and the current model makes his head looks 2 times thinner than most other heroes.

    Just a random lurker – strange essences are for putting new counters on existing strange weapons/armor. We had the same system in TF2.

    cmatt just didnt interpret the textures well….. It was clearly that the textures of rubick where further developed than the textures of undying: undying did miss alot of details on the textures.

    i predict a wild Wisp for next week. Undying and luna need at least another week to finish.

    Rubick’s model looks literally 100x more cartoonish than any other hero currently in Dota 2.  He looks like he belongs in LoL….  Please make him a human like in Dota 1… He looks like complete garbage atm..

    No, these are going to be like “strange parts” in TF2. You can add them to existing Strange items to track more things. For example, if you add the “first blood” essence to a strange item that tracks Kills, that strange item will track BOTH kills and first bloods.

          Replays should include audio channels from the game just like watching it live in game. YOu can already listen to purge or Tobi in the audio channels for the match, it should be saved in replays

    Didn’t Kunkka get an updated texture as well? When I was testing out Rubick on the Test   with my friend who was play Kunkka, I couldn’t help notice that his portrait in game looked much clearer, and that his sword didn’t look all muddy like it does the on the regular client.

    matt!!!i know why you always messed up with predicting the next hero…it is because valve actually adds the texture of the next hero on the main client update not on the test build update, which you missed analyzing coz you will only analyze the test build update…lol…valve is really trolling on you…
