Dota 2 16th May Patch – Content Analysis

This week’s Dota 2 test patch brings a very unexpected arrival, Treant Protector, his progress in last week’s patch was much less than that of Chaos Knight’s or Ogre Magi’s ಠ_ಠ. Full changelog here.

Front End Changes

This week’s patch brings us a number of UI and visual updates to the front end.

UI Updates

The killcam UI has been updated to include the new card based hero/loadout selection UI, which also shows the specific role pips for that hero and the role their description when hovering over them.

You can also hover over the unit’s abilities and you see the tooltip for it.

Units with a lifespan (Wards, Illusions etc) will now show a timer in the place of where XP is shown for a hero.

It’s now possible to ping the rune revealing to your team mates what kind of rune it is.

The new/updated hero roles are now visible on the current UI:

There’s now a confirmation box when quitting the game, to prevent accidently closing it.

Visual Updates

The Aegis now has some new particle effects that play when the hero wielding the Aegis dies, there’s also an “Aegis Timer” effect that is currently not implemented yet.

Lifestealer’s feast now shows an overhead value, similar to the healing numbers we got in the last patch.

Death Prophet’s ghosts from her ultimate now have a new impact effect.

Back End Changes

We’ve a number of back end updates this week, more in game store strings, UI updates and a ton of new sound files/voice over work.

      The attributes refer to a number of different statuses (tradable, gift etc).

      Valve have already confirmed that items will not have any gameplay impact.

            That makes -no- sense, as he said anything item related will be purely aesthetic in Dota 2 why would they put “number of kills you’ve gotten with this item” on a mantlepiece?

            With TF2 items had a large impact on the game so showing kills on your favorite gun was clearly a good idea, but with things like hats it has no such counter- why then would it be in Dota 2?

      If you simple don’t know what is happening, there is not any resemblence
      (beside some eastethic aspect by the origin) in this game and anything from wow, if there is going to be some atribute in the cosmetic items (as long as I suposse) it wouldn’t be anything that actually empowered your charater (rule 1° in in-game store, never sell power), like hats in tf2. If there is going to be any character skill or stats modification via cosmetics, there are going to be like the weapon in tf2 (empower one stat and low other).

      I must say that everything that I say is pure assumption based on the game and valve story.

      Attributes could be funny or … I mean who knows. There’s no way to know that “attributes” means “+2 str” … in fact, I’d be surprised if it did.

      The attributes are not going to be game-changing things like 15% bonus damage or anything like that. They will be things like kill counters, courier kills and the like.

    in pudge’s sounds file there’s a sound file for blink dagger, and storm has aghanims sound file, Does that mean that pudge will be able to use blink dagger and storms ult will be upgraded by aghanims?

      most heroes have aghanims lines even if they don’t have aghanims upgrades, that would be because they already are able to buy aghanims anyway and it would be stupid to call the voice actors again just to record a single aghanim’s line when ice finally decides to give an ultimate upgrade on a hero. similarly with dagger, it will be there when ice decides its ok to have him buy a dagger, why and when that will happen does not matter.

    CyborgMatt, personally, I think you should stop with the predictions because now whenever you try to predict which hero is going to come out next, Valve is intentionally trying to thwart it. Case in point, new portrait of the Phantom Assassin seems to suggest that we might be getting her next.

    And it is annoying because you keep guessing my favorite hero to be next and Valve isn’t going with it.
