Using Alien Swarm and the built in tools it shipped with it’s possible to load the DotA 2 particle files into the Source engine particle editor. You can find a tutorial on how to load DotA 2′s PCFs into the Alien Swarm tools at the bottom of this post.

Screenshots

I have attached some screenshots below to show off the particle editor and some of the unreleased heroes` particles (click to enlarge).

Tutorial

If you’ve followed the model viewer guide before then that will give you a head start, the process is very similar with a few minor tweaks:

  1. Download GCFScape: http://nemesis.thewavelength.net/index.php?p=26
  2. Launch GCFScape and open the “dota 2 beta\dota\pak01_dir.vpk” file.
  3. Extract the files to a new directory called “DOTA 2″.
  4. Copy the extracted “materials”, “models” and “particles” folder to: “Steam\steamapps\common\alien swarm\swarm”.
  5. Add “-tools -nop4″ to your Alien Swarm launch options.
  6. Start Alien Swarm and you’ll be presented with the “Source Actbusy Tool”.
  7. Press “Tools” and select “Particle Editor”, you’ll now be in the particle editor.
  8. From here you can load in the particles from the folder you copied into the Alien Swarm directory.

If you’ve any questions use the comments, the “contact me” page or twitter etc.

Enjoy.

    I have a quick question if you will, how many of those particles look finished to you?

    • Cyborgmatt

      A lot of the particles look finished but you can still spot a few work in progress ones for some of the heroes we’ve less content for (Lanaya, Phantom and Gyro).

    Do you think there is a chance obsidian destroyer could be this week? His particles look done and on dota2 wiki it says his textures are polished

    • Cyborgmatt

      Yes, I have already updated my previous content analysis post and added him to my prediction. I’m not 100% on him coming out like I am with Clinkz but there’s a chance that we might see him.

  • Stephenson Danny

    So you are 100% that clinkz is coming out this Friday?
    Sweet! My favorite hero from Dota.
    <3

    • Cyborgmatt

      Well, I can never be sure what Valve will do, so lets say at least 90%.

  • Hotshotgg

    I’m pulling for Bane. Cyborgmatt, please, with all of your good luck and charm, pray for Bane to be next! Also what do you think his chances are? Will he be next if Clinkz is this week?

    • Cyborgmatt

      It all depends on what Valve are planning to do with his sleep, I’m pretty sure that’s what is holding him back at the moment.

    Hi I am using all those particles and combining them together;

    I have been using model viewer as well;Though there is a problem, I tried going to Materials Editor;
    It keeps on crashing when I try to open up the VMT and VTF,
    I wanna look at texture but it doesnt let me XD.

    Also do you think they will have some kind of Dota 2 SDK?

    • Cyborgmatt

      Use VTFEdit to view the textures:

      As for a DotA 2 SDK, well that’s all down to Valve, for the meantime we will have to use the Alien Swarm SDK.

        I actually tried using htat but its giving me error before i start to open the program =/

        • Cyborgmatt

          Make sure you install the runtime packages as well, either these two if you’re on Windows 32bit:

          Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 (x86)
          Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 (x86)

          Or these two if you’re on Windows 64bit:

          Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 (x64)
          Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 (x64)

    Hi good news,
    It works perfectly now XD, instead of downloading it, i just open the archieves.
    THANK YOU XD
    anyways,

    Do you have any idea about the materials editor?
    I just hope they have another good patch XD

  • Zach

    so for each new version of dota 2 released we have to repeat these steps?

    • Cyborgmatt

      For the moment yes. It might be worth setting up some symlinks.

  • guestzz

    So has anything new happened this week?

  • Jhonsmith

    hi, what about your prediction of next week hero(es)? thanks

  • Alexander Karlsson

    Hi. First of all, great blog :) As an artist and player of Dota2, i am very interesting in checking out the particles of Dota2. I followed your steps, but I dont have the option “particle editor” when I press “Tools” in the “Source Actbusy tool”. Any ideas what might cause the problem?

  • Dante

    I don’t get it, how do I open particle editor?
